Book Swap Stop Success for World Book Day

This World Book Day marks the third year anniversary of Telford Centre’s hugely successful Free Book Swap Stop, which has grown from strength to strength with thousands of books having been swapped and re read by visitors.

The initiative invites shoppers to come along to the centre’s Swap Stop, located by the Customer Service desk, to swap their pre loved reads, and has seen demand grow significantly with a second Swap Stop now also located at the centre’s Shopmobility unit.

In 2025 Telford Centre teamed up with the charity Read Easy Telford and Shropshire East with users of the Swap Stop helping to raise £478 for the charity, which helps adults with their reading needs.

Claire Dempsey, Team Leader, Read Easy Telford and Shropshire East said:

“The support from Telford Centre and the local community means so much to us. The £478 raised through the Book Swap Stop will allow us to buy eight new sets of books to support new reading pairs. In 2025, 23 adults began their reading journey with Read Easy Telford and Shropshire East; with every set of books helping to build confidence and independence. We’d love to hear from anyone who would like reading support, or who is interested in volunteering as a reading coach and helping change lives locally.”

This year Telford Centre are encouraging parents to bring their children along to exchange their World Book Day vouchers at participating retailers Waterstones, TG Jones and The Works, all located inside the centre. Parents can also pop to the Book Swap Stop to pick up a pre loved read of their own or get more information about Read Easy Telford and Shropshire East.

Katie Broome, Telford Centre Marketing Manager said:

“We’ve been amazed by the popularity of the Book Swap Stop, and have definitely seen the growing trend in the popularity of books and sharing those reading favourites. We have customers swap books daily and continue to receive some very generous donations from the community, for which we thank them very much. We’re also very pleased to be supporting the Read Easy charity and will continue to do so throughout 2026. This year is also National Reading Year so we hope the success of the Book Swap Stop will continue to grow and flourish.”
